On Saturday, 2 March, to commemorate the work of women during the 1984/85 Miners’ Strike, there will be a national event held in Durham, writes Yvonne Hardman on behalf of National Women Against Pit Closures.
This event will be a mix of speeches, banners, music and comedy with an undertone of resistance and celebration to both remember and inspire the next generation of women activists.
To this end, we are looking to find as many women’s support group banners as possible from the 84/85 strike to be brought to Durham on the day but also to be photographed in advance for a series of commemorative artworks to be launched at the event. This includes banners which won’t be in Durham on the day.
Groups or individuals who have these banners and would like to be involved are invited to get in touch with Heather Wood at hjwoodmail[@]gmail[].com, Rose Hunter at roseandsteve1992[@]gmail[.]com or Mary Stratford at marystrat60[@]gmail[.]com as soon as possible.
We are currently arranging regional dates and times for them to be photographed for the project.
There is a confirmed photo session in County Durham for women’s banners on the 6th and 7th November between 9am and 5pm at the Glebe Centre in Murton. Other regions will be confirmed soon so please get in touch.
For any press queries around the wider event please email hjwoodmail[@]gmail[.]com.
