At The Humble Garden CIC, sowing seeds is about much more than growing vegetables and flowers. It is about growing confidence, connection and community right here in Ferryhill.
As the days begin to lengthen, the garden is starting to wake up after winter. Participants have been filling seed trays with compost and planting tiny seeds that will soon become flowers. Each seed planted is a small act of hope for the months ahead.
For many people, this is their first experience of growing something from scratch. There is something really special about placing a seed into soil, watering it, and coming back to see the first green shoots appear. It encourages patience, care and a sense of achievement.
Seed sowing sessions are relaxed, welcoming and open to everyone. Children love checking trays to see what has germinated, while adults often find the process calming and grounding. Conversations happen naturally, knowledge is shared, and people feel comfortable learning at their own pace.
Many of the plants grown will be taken home to grow on windowsills and in gardens across Ferryhill, while others will stay in the garden to be planted out later. In this way, the impact of each session spreads far beyond the garden itself.
The Humble Garden CIC exists to reduce social isolation, improve wellbeing and help people reconnect with nature and each other. Seed sowing is a simple activity, but it reflects everything the garden is about. Small beginnings, shared experiences and the belief that with care, things can grow.
