Pupils Receive Mencap Accredited Award

Pupils from Evergreen Primary School and The Oaks Secondary School, on Warwick Road, have taken part in an after school club to work towards achieving the Gateway 8.13, an award which is accredited by MENCAP.

The children are the first in the northern area to gain this award and have taken part in various activities to complete a series of twelve different challenges. They have worked together, supported by school staff and some parents to complete this.

Mrs Dickinson, Acting Deputy Head, said that the school was proud of the children’s effort and achievement, saying, “Pupils all enjoyed the activities which have helped to develop their confidence and parents have given positive feedback on the activities.”

All of the pupils completed a portfolio of evidence that included painting, drawing, photographs, surveys and written tasks. Local Councillors, Zair and Harrison, sought funding for the group and visited the school to see pupils participating before presenting pupils with their certificates.

Councillor Harrison was impressed with the school and the efforts of both staff and pupils. The school intends to run this club again in September for another group of pupils. Once the youngsters are aged over 13, they can move on to study other courses, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
