This Christmas, Bishop Auckland’s Newgate Centre is bringing back one of the simplest and most loved festive traditions — posting a letter to Santa.
A bright red Santa Post Box, officially approved by the North Pole Delivery Office, has arrived in the centre, ready to collect wishes from children across the town. It’s a small thing, but one filled with meaning — a reminder of a time when every shopping trip in December ended with a stop at the big red box and a moment of quiet excitement.
“There’s nowhere else in town where children can post an official letter to Santa,” said Andrew Lee, Centre Manager. “For many parents and grandparents, it’s something they remember doing when they were little. Those simple, joyful traditions have quietly disappeared from a lot of places — and we wanted to bring them back for our community.”
Children can post their letters for free, keeping the experience open to everyone. For those who would like to hear back from Santa, families can stop by The Elf Station, where Santa’s helpers will add the official North Pole Special Stamp for £3.50.
Each stamped letter is carefully registered with the North Pole Delivery Office, making sure it finds its way to Santa’s desk — and that any replies find their way safely home. Families are simply asked to include a return address so the postman, and Santa himself, know exactly where to send the letter back.
“Not every child will want a reply, and that’s fine,” Andrew added. “What matters most is the act of writing — the thought, the hope, the moment a family shares together. Watching a child post their letter, seeing a parent or grandparent smile because they remember doing the same — that’s the real magic of Christmas.”
The Santa Post Box and Elf Station are part of the Christmas at Newgate Centre celebrations — a programme of community events designed to rekindle old traditions, celebrate kindness, and bring a little light back to the heart of Bishop Auckland.
