A £45 million development in Tindale, which has been blighted by planning delays, may finally go ahead.
The government minister responsible for reviewing the application for the leisure and retail complex, stated that she could not justify intervening because the plan did not conflict with national planning guidelines.
Commenting on the announcement, Helen Goodman MP praised the “wonderful news”. She added, “At a time when unemployment is rising, this development gives hope that the problems we face in our area are not long-term or structural”.
The new development could create up to 1,000 jobs and will include numerous new leisure and retail facilities. There will be a new Sainsbury’s supermarket, a bowling alley, cinema, shops and restaurants, as well as a new home for Bishop Auckland FC.
The news hopefully spells the end of a long running saga, one which has seen the team wandering and homeless, since 2001.
