Bright Futures Ferryhill CIC opened their doors to Ferryhill’s first community pantry last month with roaring success!
The pantry, based at Ferryhill Sport and Education Centre, provides heavily discounted food shopping to residents to help support with the ever rising cost of living.
The service is open to anybody from Ferryhill and gives the opportunity for shoppers to choose which items they would like in one of three baskets.
Each basket is £5 and includes a ‘staples’ basket containing six cupboard items and free fruit and veg, a ‘fridge’ basket and a ‘miscellaneous’ basket.
The stock is from local supermarkets, food saving charities and donations, giving a good variety for customers.
On the first day of opening the pantry benefited 76 residents in Ferryhill including families, elderly and single occupants.
“We are very keen to open the service to help as many people in Ferryhill as possible,” said Hannah Wilkinson, director of Bright Futures.
“The cost of a food shop has risen so dramatically the majority of households are now affected.”
Currently the pantry is open every Wednesday from 4pm-7pm.
It costs £1 to become a lifetime member and food shopping can be to suit any budget.
“We are looking to open more days a week but are in need of suppliers to help support this,” added Hannah, “as the need is clearly there.”
