Gordon Banks, 1966 World Cup-winning goalkeeper, visited Bishop Auckland recently to help a youth football team raise funds for a team trip.
Gordon spoke at a Sportsman’s Dinner, held on Friday, March 27th at Cockton Hill Club, to raise cash to enable St. Mary’s Under 16’s to play in the Barcelona Cup in July.
“We had a sell out of 200 people at the Sportsman’s Night last Friday, along with a comedian, and we managed to raise £2700 with the help of an auction, raffles, etc,” said a spokesperson for the club.
The team is hoping to raise £7000 to take the squad of 15 players abroad from July 6th to the 11th, in order to play in the Junior Barcelona Cup. The club raised £2000 of the total amount from parents and various business’s in the town and would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all who generously donated to the cause.
